Over the years I have been polling practitioners, leaders and employees about the state of the internal communications function. My study, published in SCMS Journal of Indian Management’s July-September 2017 edition, attempts to fill a gap that exists in internal communication literature on the role, focus, support and future of the function in the region.
It recommends approaches that organizations and practitioners can consider while attempting internal communication interventions. There are opportunities to invest in learning and development for internal communication professionals.
Overall, practitioners have an optimistic view of the future. They feel opportunities ahead are in mobile engagement, corporate social responsibility, measurement, social media, analytics and video. Future studies can consider the influence of tools and resources, culture, leadership support, internal branding among others on practitioners’ perceptions.
